What inspired Quest for the Beast?

After writing Waltz into the Waves, I was interested in trying my hand at some other fairytale retellings. 

What was the biggest challenge in writing Quest for the Beast?

Trying to pack a big theme into one tiny short story was hard. I don't think this was my best work, but I enjoyed it
