My Childhood was Amazing
1:00 AMOf all the books I share with people, this is actually the hardest... because it's true. It took more courage to put this book out there than any other book I've done before or since. I knew people would make a lot of judgments; I knew that people would disagree, and I knew a lot of people would think I was whitewashing because I didn't share a lot of dirty details. But this book was written with a lot of love.
What inspired this book?
An older couple I had known for years had told me I should write a book about my family. "You need to call it ' There Was Always Laughter in Our House." I smiled and told them I would think about it. I went home, did my chores, and thought fondly of this older couple. They just didn't understand that I was neither a non-fiction writer nor a humorous one.
Well, inspiration struck late that night, and I think I was up until 2 am working on the idea. It took me a while to figure out how I wanted to organize the book, but I ended up loving the project.
What was the biggest challenge in writing this book?
The biggest challenge was figuring out what to share and what not to share. I made sure that each person in the family had a chance to read the book. I told them if there was anything I shared they didn't want to, I would chop it out. It was funny because the siblings who voiced the most concern when I started the project didn't even read it until after it was published, saying they trusted me.
Why read the book?
If you are interested in big families, homeschooling, or even just my growing-up years, this is your chance.
The story behind the dedication:
The Casts are now in heaven. I don't doubt they heard from Jesus, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
I was so, so grateful I got to give them a copy and read some of the stories aloud to them. The impact these two had on my life will last for my whole life.
