Movie Review: The Queen

8:35 AM

Movie Rating: PG-13 (before you freak on me, I don’t understand why it got this rating.)
My Rating (on a scale of 1-10) 8

No, I do not make a habit of watching PG-13 movies. In fact, I shy away from anything that is rated above PG. But after several people that we knew told us that they thought we would like The Queen, we checked it out from the library.

We sat down to watch it with our fingers on the stop button, ready to stop the movie if there was any offensive language. By the end of the movie all of us were wondering why in the world that is was rated PG-13. There were a few cuss words but they were very mild, brief and forgettable; the kind that you don’t even think about when you thinking about the movie. The only thing that some people might find offensive (that I can think of right now) is some very subtle references to the marital unfaithfulness of Charles.

The movie follows real historical events, which is one of the reasons I like it. It follows the queen and her and handling of Princess Diana’s death. For those of you who, like me, don’t remember Princess Diana being alive and have only heard about her from news stories and books, this was an eye opening film about the character (or lake thereof) of her life and the story of her death.

The film opens to a few days before Diana’s death as Tony Blair wins the election by a land slid. The queen is not very happy with this choice and gives Blair a polite but cold reception. Blair is portrayed as a man with a lot of character who loves his family and his country and has no idea about high society causing some funny moments.

When the news of Diana’s death reaches the royal house, the queen, as she was taught, decided that they royal family should grieve in privet out of the public eye. This angers many people and there is talk that perhaps the monarchy should be abolished entirely.

This was historically accurate and informative film while being enjoyable for the whole family. Even though all the events are surrounding the death of someone, it is not a sad movie or at least I didn’t find it to be so. The acting was amazing; they deserved every award they got. The cinematography was exceptional in a subtle non overwhelming way and the characters are unforgettable.

I think this is a great movie if you are looking for a good movie night that will spark some great discussions.
